CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Samford volleyball team swept Western Carolina (25-20,25-20,25-20) in their first match of two on their Southern Conference road trip.
This is the Bulldogs first conference win of the season, making their league play record 1-4 and their overall season record, 6-10.
Bulldogs opened the match behind the Catamounts until jumping ahead with a kill from
Ally Cordes with a score of 15-13. Cordes lead the Bulldogs with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Kaleigh Meritt followed with 11 kills and a block. Cordes scored the final three points of the first set including the final kill for the Bulldogs to win set one, 25-20.
The second set started out with the Bulldogs on a 4-0 scoring run. The Catamounts never led in the set and found themselves behind the Bulldogs with the final score of set 2 being 25-20. There were three service aces for the Bulldogs in the set with Carly Mintael,
Amelia Johnston and
Shea Bruntmyer each recording one.
After opening strong in the first two sets, Bulldogs fell behind quickly in the third set, with the Catamounts having an early 5-1 lead. Meritt put the Bulldogs ahead with her 11
th kill of the night, 10-9. Bulldogs didn't fall behind after that point with it being a tight set until 20-20. Samford went on to score the last five points, with the final point being a kill from
Tatelyn Brandsma sealing the set for the Bulldogs, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.
Bulldogs will continue their two-match conference road trip next against Chattanooga on Saturday at 3 p.m. This match will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and can be followed on Live Stats.
