BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team split a doubleheader with Kennesaw State Saturday at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs won game one, 7-1 in seven innings and then dropped the second game, 10-6.
With the split, Samford is now 4-7 on the season. Kennesaw State's record moved to 5-7.
In game one, Samford was led by
Michael Gupton, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Gus Gandy tripled, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Jackson Harris,
Cade Carr and
Parker McDonald drove in a run each in game one for Samford.
Cameron Keshock (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up one run on six hits and striking out four batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
For Kennesaw State in game one, Chris Cole went 3-for-3 at the plate. Donovan Cash went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ty Bayer (1-1) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on four hits to take the loss for the Owls.
Kennesaw State took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Samford, however, plated two runs in the second inning and four in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Samford added one final run in the sixth inning to make the final score 7-1.
In game two, Samford was led by Gandy, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Jeffrey Ince, Carr and
Trey Higgins each homered in game two for Samford.
Noah Berry (1-1) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
Kennesaw State was led in game two by Donovan Cash and Cam Suto, who both homered. Daniel Powell (1-1) pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits to pick up the win for the Owls.
Samford took the early lead in game two with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Kennesaw State plated a run in the second inning and four runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead. Samford scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-3, but KSU added a run in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-3. Samford closed to within one run at 6-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the top of the seventh inning, KSU added four runs to put the game away at 10-5. Samford added one final run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 10-6.
Samford and Kennesaw State will conclude their series with a single game on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
