LEXINGTON, Va. - The Samford men's and women's track and field team competed for the past two days at the Southern Conference Indoor Championship hosted by VMI. The Bulldogs continued their run of dominance in the league as they captured the women's team title for their tenth straight season while the men captured their sixth straight title. The Bulldogs had 11 individual conference winners and two relay championship teams.
The women's pentathlon got the championships going yesterday as
Kiersten Bell and
Hannah Pettyjohn scored solid points for the Bulldogs by finishing in third and fourth place. The Dogs had three top-five finishers in the men's heptathlon as
Ethan Womack headlined as the winner in the event, followed by
Garner Ezell in third and
Bryce Williamson in fourth. Freshman
Bryce Davis captured the men's shot put championship while teammates
Eli Penix and
Carl Henry came in third and fourth.
Samford finished one, two in the men's pole vault as
Brenden Vanderpool topped
Carter Ellis for first place. The Bulldogs jumpers were led by
Dorsey Parker who won the women's high jump and
Ellison Chadwick who came in second in the long jump. Samford finished in second as a team in the men's and women's DMR to close out the final events on day one.
Day two started with Samford high jumpers
Jaggerd Moore and
Arthur Chitty finishing atop the podium. Moore finished atop the final by clearing a mark of 2.13 meters.
Ian Jones easily outclassed the field in the men's tripled jump as he finished with a best of 14.70 meters. The women's pole vaulters took five of the top-six spots for Samford, led by
Libby Jackson whose personal record of 3.80m beat teammate
Antonina Tereshchenko on misses as they finished at the same height.
Carley Perkins,
Lindsey Havens, and
Emerson Simpson came in 4th-6th.
It was finals day on the track today and the first win for the Bulldogs came in the women's mile from
Adeline Haisch who set a personal record time of 4:45.49 in her victory.
Amiel Dabney ran away with the women's 60m hurdles victory while
Bradley Franklin ran a top-10 time in the nation of 7.60 in the men's side of the hurdles to earn the top spot. Freshman
Lizzy Pardue won the 400m finals with a time of 55.45, the best time of her career while
Tyke Tabor came in second place on the men's side of the 400m as he ran a season-best.
Zephaniah Carico-McLennan took silver in the men's 800m despite running a season-best time in the event. Chadwick got her second silver medal of the championship as she came in second in the 200m finals to go along with her long jump medal while
Cole Grande came in third in the men's 200m.
Samford finished off the event by outrunning everyone and winning the men's and women's 4x400m relay. The women's team featured
Grace Lueders,
Maddie Edwards,
Lizzy Pardue, and
Ayden Drake while the men's side was made up of
Landon Wright,Â
Zephaniah Carico-McLennan,
Jackson Olivo, and
Tyke Tabor.
The Bulldog finished the men's team event with a total of 177 points, ten ahead of Western Carolina who was a close second place while the Samford women's side cruised, finishing with 163.5 points ahead of second-place Wofford who had 119.5.
