Baseball Falls In Extra Innings To Jax State, 6-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to in-state rival Jacksonville State in 10 innings Tuesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the loss, Samford fell to 12-9 on the season. Jacksonville State improved to 14-7 with the win.
 
Samford was led in the loss by Jake Souders, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Michael Gupton drove in two runs, going 1-for-5 at the plate. Samford used nine pitchers during the game and the group combined to strike out 18 JSU batters. Joseph Lee (1-2) allowed two runs, just one earned to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
 
For JSU, Caleb Johnson went 2-for-4 with a home run to tie the game in the ninth inning and one RBI. Colton Hegwood and Brady Thomas also drove in a run each for the Gamecocks. Joe Scarborough (2-0) pitched 1.0 inning without allowing a run to earn the win for JSU. Austin Williamson picked up his first save of the season, tossing the final scoreless inning.
 
After Jacksonville State took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning, Samford plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Souders scored Samford's first run on a wild pitch. Gupton later doubled to drive in two runs for a two-ruin Samford lead.
 
Jacksonville State answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to knot the score at 3-3. Samford, however, took the lead back at 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Souders singled up the middle to drive in Jackson Harris.
 
The score remained 4-3 entering the top of the ninth inning. JSU's Johnson led off the inning with a solo home run to right field to tie the score at 4-4. Neither team could score for the rest of the ninth inning and the teams headed to extra innings knotted at 4-4.
 
In the top of the 10th inning, Rob Gordon scored on an error to give JSU a 5-4 lead. Ace Williamson later scored on a ground out by Hegwood, giving the Gamecocks a 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs but were unable to push a run across and the game ended in a 6-4 Jacksonville State win.
 
Samford will open Southern Conference play with a series this weekend at ETSU. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 4 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) in Johnson City, Tenn.
