Baseball Takes Sunday Game From Kennesaw State, 7-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team earned a 7-3 win over Kennesaw State in the final game of a four-game series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 5-7 on the season. Kennesaw State fell to 5-8 with the loss. Each team won two games in the weekend series.

Evan Steckmesser (1-0) pitched 5.1 innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Steckmesser struck out three batters without allowing a walk in the win.

"Steck was just really efficient," Samford head coach Tony David said. "He was getting a lot of first pitch and second pitch outs. He throws so many strikes that teams want to go up there and hit and it goes to our benefit often."

At the plate for Samford, Jackson Harris went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gus Gandy went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Parker McDonald went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Jeffrey Ince drove in two runs, and Cade Carr and John Whitney drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.

For Kennesaw State, Cooper Williams and Cam Suto both homered in the loss. Nolan Silver (0-2) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound for the Owls.

After Kennesaw State scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a home run by Williams, Samford plated its first run in the bottom of the inning when Ince scored on a sacrifice fly by Carr to cut the lead to 2-1.

Samford took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning. Ince and Harris drove in a run each as Samford took a 3-2 lead. In the fourth inning, Gandy doubled to bring in McDonald to push the lead to 4-2 for the Bulldogs.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Whitney and Ince drove in a run each and Whitney scored on an error for a 7-2 Samford lead. Kennesaw State added one final run in the top of the ninth inning on a homer by Suto to make the final score 7-3.

Next up, Samford will play at West Georgia on Tuesday, March 4. The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. (CT) start from Carrollton, Ga.
