BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University football team went through its first full scrimmage of spring practice Friday afternoon at Pete Hanna Stadium.
"I thought we came out and we tried hard, which is one thing I wanted to see," Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher said. "We were very simple on both sides of the ball. I wanted to see the guys not having to think and just executing. I'll reserve my judgment for how we played until I watch the film."
Four different quarterbacks saw time in the scrimmage, with returning starter
Quincy Crittendon seeing the majority of the snaps. Crittendon threw a pair of touchdown passes, one for 22 yards to
Preston Bird and another for 35 yards to
Teddy Davenport.
Charlie Gilliam, a transfer quarterback from Wake Forest, scored on a 37-yard run.
Hatcher talked about Crittendon's performance.
"He looked good early on," Hatcher said. "He made a couple of mistakes where he's got to get rid of the football, but all-in-all I thought he had a nice day."
Defensively,
Gumbo Gaskins and
Caidan Maddux had an interception each. Gaskins returned his interception for a touchdown. The defense also had a couple of fourth-down stops during the session.
"It looked like we tackled well," Hatcher said of the defense. "It looked like we were in some good spots. We had a couple of breakdowns on that side of the ball. But I thought defensively, we really started slow and really picked it up as the scrimmage went on."
Hatcher said, overall, he liked what he saw from his team's first full scrimmage.
"I saw some good things," Hatcher said. "I thought we flew around. I'm looking forward to seeing how we'll improve again next week."
The Bulldogs will take the weekend off and be back at practice next week. The team will practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then will wrap up the spring with a scrimmage on Friday at 4 p.m. at Pete Hanna Stadium.
