Strong Pitching Performance Leads Bulldogs To 5-0 Win Over Creighton

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford starting pitcher Mason Blasche threw 7.0 shutout innings to lead the Bulldog baseball team to a 5-0 win over Creighton in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 14-14 on the season. Creighton fell to 16-7 with the loss.

Blasche (3-0) allowed just three hits in earning the win. He struck out seven batters, while allowing just one walk. Evan Steckmesser pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit to close out the win.

"This was a really good bounce back game for our guys," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Mason set a new standard for our staff today. He was just dominant from the first pitch to the last. He got out of a little bit of trouble in the second inning when they got all three of their hits against him and we kept them off the scoreboard. But other than that, it was just cruising."

At the plate for Samford, Mchael Gupton went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Cade Carr, Parker McDonald, Trey Higgins and Gatlin Pitts had an RBI each for the Bulldogs.

For Creighton, Ben North, Nate McHugh, Dakota Duffalo and Nick Venteiche had one hit each on the day. Wilson Magers (3-2) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bluejays.

The teams were scoreless for the first three and a half innings of the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Samford broke the scoreless tie by plating two runs. Jake Souders scored the first run on a ground out by Pitts, and Higgins scored on an error as Samford took a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs plated three more runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-0. Carr singled to drive in Gupton for the first run of the inning. McDonald and Higgins both walked with the bases loaded as Samford built a 5-0 lead.

Next up, Samford will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Tuesday, April 1. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
