Bulldogs Use Long Ball To Take Series From VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Samford University baseball team belted eight home runs on its way to a 16-4, seven-inning win in the final game of a three-game series at VMI Saturday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.

"An incredible day for our guys, obviously swinging the bats," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Eight home runs is unbelievable. This was a really good weekend for us to come on the road and take the series, especially after losing one Friday night. The guys bounced back and got them yesterday and we started swinging early today and didn't stop, so it was a really big series win.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 22-17 overall and 8-4 in Southern Conference play. VMI fell to 25-16 overall and 5-7 in SoCon play. Samford won the series from VMI, two games to one.

Jeffrey Ince turned in an incredible performance, going 4-for-5 with three home runs, a double and five RBI. Jackson Harris went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and three RBI. Parker McDonald went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Angelo Prieto went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Gus Gandy went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI.

Mason Blasche (6-0) earned the win on the mound for Samford. The freshman tossed 5.0 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits. Drew Druckenmiller pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit.

For VMI, Owen Prince, James Newsome and Ryan Peterson had two hits each. Roberto Velasquez (3-2) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up five runs on four hits to take the loss for the Keydets.

Samford got off to a fast start with four runs in the first inning on a solo home run by Ince, an RBI double by Cade Carr and a two-run homer by McDonald. In the second inning, Samford added three more runs on a solo home run by Prieto and a two-run shot by Harris as Samford built a 7-2 lead.

With Samford leading, 7-3, the Bulldogs added six runs in the top of the fourth inning to push the lead to 13-3. Gandy, Ince and Harris led the inning off with three-straight solo homers. McDonald, Prieto and Ince had an RBI each as Samford built the 10-run lead.

After VMI cut the lead to 13-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Samford came back with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to make the final score 16-4. Gandy doubled to drive in Matthew Strand for the first run of the inning. Ince then homered for the third time in the game, this one a two-run shot for a 12-run Samford lead.

Next up, Samford will play host to Alabama on Tuesday, April 22. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
