BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University football team will wrap up spring practice with its second scrimmage Friday at 4 p.m. at Pete Hanna Stadium.
The Bulldogs held their first scrimmage last Friday afternoon. In that scrimmage, returning starting quarterback
Quincy Crittendon tossed a pair of touchdown passes, one for 22 yards to
Preston Bird and another for 35 yards to
Teddy Davenport. Another quarterback,
Charlie Gilliam, a transfer from Wake Forest, scored on a 37-yard run.
On the defensive side, the Bulldogs produced a pair of turnovers.
Gumbo Gaskins and
Caidan Maddux both had interceptions, with Gaskins returning his for a touchdown.
Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher is entering his 11
th season in charge of the program. He talked about what improvements he wanted to see from the first scrimmage to the second one.
"I want us to execute better than we did last week," Hatcher said. "We'll try some different combinations of some guys. I want to see some new players step up in the roles that we're asking them to be in. I want it to be a very physical scrimmage and hopefully we'll accomplish those things on Friday."
The Bulldogs return 52 players from last year's squad, while losing 57. Samford returns one starter on offense, one starter on defense and two starters on special teams from last season.
Samford will open the 2025 season by hosting West Georgia on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Pete Hanna Stadium.
