Baseball Blasts Four Homers In 19-5 Win At Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford University baseball team hit four three-run home runs on its way to a dominating 19-4, eight-inning win at Wofford in the second game of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at King Field.

"This was another unreal complete performance by our guys," Samford head coach Tony David said. "What can you say about the offensive show? We have hit a lot of home runs against a team that doesn't give them up. We had a lot of tough at bats with two strikes and situational baseball when it was needed."

With the win, Samford improved its season record to 16-15 overall and 3-2 in Southern Conference play. Wofford fell to 21-11 overall and 2-3 in league play. The win, paired with Friday's 14-0 win, gives Samford the series win over the Terriers.

For Samford, Trey Higgins went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double and six RBI. Jackson Harris went 4-for-6 with a home run, a double and five RBI. Jake Souders went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Gus Gandy and Michael Gupton had two hits and two RBI each.

On the mound for Samford, Evan Steckmesser (2-1) earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs on five hits. Cameron Keshock started the game on the mound, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.

"Keshock was great on the mound," David said. "He was victimized a little by soft contact in the infield. The zone was pretty consistent, but college tight. Our guys pitched to it well overall."

For Wofford, Tyler Hare went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and one RBI. Tyler Bak went 4-for-5 for the Terriers, while Tanner Hardin drove in two runs. Cullen Condon (1-1) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on five hits to take the loss on the mound for Wofford.

After Wofford took the early lead with a run in the first inning, Samford came back with three runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning and one run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. In the second inning Higgins hit the first of his two three-run homers to give Samford the lead for good. In the third inning, Jeffrey Ince scored on a sacrifice fly by Cade Carr. The run in the fourth inning scored when Gandy singled to drive in Parker McDonald.

Wofford came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-3. Samford, however, plated three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to push the lead to 11-3. In the fifth inning, Higgins hit his second three-run homer of the game. In the sixth inning, Harris hit a three-run home run as Samford built an eight-run lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wofford plated a run to cut the lead to 11-4. In the top of the seventh inning, Gupton single to drive in Higgins to make the score 12-4.

Samford put the game away with seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to push the lead to 19-4. Souders hit a three-run homer for the first three runs in the inning. Harris drove in two runs, while Gandy and Gupton drove in a run each as Samford built a 15-run lead. In the bottom of the ninth inning. Wofford added one final run to make the final score 19-5.

Samford and Wofford will conclude their series with a game on Sunday. The game is set for a 12 p.m. (CT) start.
