BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team gave up six late runs, five in the eighth inning, to fall to Miami of Ohio, 7-1, Saturday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to inclement weather. With the loss, Samford fell to 23-22 on the season. Miami improved its record to 26-19.
Samford was led in the loss by
Michael Gupton, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Jeffrey Ince drove in Samford's lone run in the game, going 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Cameron Keshock (4-3) pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up three runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
The Redhawks were led at the plate by Ryan Novak, going 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. David Novak also went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dominic Krupinski went 2-for-3 for Miami. Clayton Burke (4-2) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on one hit to earn the win on the mound for the Redhawks.
Miami struck first in the top of the third inning when Ryan Novak hit a solo home run to right field for a 1-0 Redhawk lead. Samford answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double by Ince to drive in Gupton to knot the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when Miami took control of the game with five runs. Ryan Novak scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. David Novak then singled for the second run of the inning, making the score 3-1. Christopher Roa and Blake Buzzeo both walked with the bases loaded for a 5-1 Redhawk lead. The final run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Baker to make the score 6-1.
Miami plated one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 7-1. David Novak scored on a wild pitch for the game's final run.
The teams will conclude their series with a single game on Sunday afternoon. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
