Sept. 26, 2000

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford University freshman Hayley Kolb scored her second goal of the match with just over two minutes left in regulation time as the Bulldogs won their seventh straight game 2-1 over Montevallo in women's soccer action Tuesday night at the Samford Field.

Samford improves to 7-2 on the season and 5-0 in matches decided by one goal. The Bulldogs are also 4-0 at home this season.

Kolb's first goal came in the 61st minute to tie the score at 1-1. Samford's Rebecca Kent took a pass from Mitzi Mahan and took a shot from 20 yards out. The shot was saved by Montevallo goalkeeper Adrianne Peters, hit the cross bar and bounced right to Kolb who calmly put the ball in the back of the net and tied Samford's freshman record for most goals in a season.

Kolb broke the three-year old record in the 88th minute. Christa Jones played a ball into the penalty area which was blocked by the Montevallo defense. Mahan collected the loose ball and found Kolb who beat Peters from 10 yards away.

Kolb's teammate senior Lindsay Anglin held the freshman record for goals in a season when she netted six in the Bulldogs first year in 1997. Kolb has scored four goals in the Bulldogs last two matches to give her seven on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Montevallo scored the game's first goal in the 50th minute. Jessica Lindell played a ball which the Samford defense failed to clear. After the misplay, Anne Berit Bergsmo found herself one-on-one with Samford goal keeper Carrie Ollom. Bergsmo fired a shot to the near post to give the Falcons a brief lead.

Samford will try for its eighth straight win on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Trans America Athletic Conference foe Jacksonville State at Samford Field. The match will begin at 1 p.m.

Montevallo (5-4) has played two division I opponents this season and has dropped both matches 2-1. The Falcons will play Lincoln Memorial at home on Friday.
