Women's Tennis Claims Pivotal Win Over Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. ---- The Samford University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech on Sunday in Cookeville, Tenn., on the Tennessee Tech tennis courts. The Golden Eagles were undefeated in the conference and in second place, while Samford was fourth heading into the match on Sunday.
The Samford women handed Tennessee Tech its first lost of the season, when they claimed a 5-1 win in a rain-shortened match. The Bulldogs improved to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles are now 5-5 overall and 4-1 in OVC play.
"I'm really excited about the way the girls played today," said Samford women's head coach Terri Sisk. "This is our first win over TTU in regular season play. The girls came out fired up and handled their business and yet again proved that they are contenders for the conference title."
The women jumped out to a quick start, claiming the doubles point, 2-1. Anna Jackson and Katie McMiller won, 8-2, on the No. 2 doubles court over Evgenia Yartseva and Marina Ruiz de Guana. On the No. 3 court Christie Baker and Whitnie Warren defeated Margot Carter and Maia Semerdjieva, 8-3.
Jackson won the No. 1 singles point over Alet Boonzaaier, 6-3, 6-2. On the No. 4 court, Warren defeated Ruiz de Guana by default, 7-5, 3-1. Sarah McKey won, 6-1, 6-3, over Yartseva on the No. 5 court, and Bethany Benson won, 6-1, 6-2, over Semerdjieva on the No. 6 court. Additionally, Katie McMiller was winning, 6-3, 5-6, over Marina Tasheva on the No. 2 court, before the match was suspended due to rain.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, April 4, when they take on Birmingham-Southern at 2 p.m. Results will be posted at www.samfordsports.com following the conclusion of the match.
