BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford's
Raijon Kelly was honored by College Sports Madness on Monday as the Bulldogs' 6-foot-4 guard from St. Paul, Minn., was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 15 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per contest in league road victories against College of Charleston and The Citadel.
Kelly, Samford's electrifying floor general, started both games and logged an average of 36 minutes per contest. At College of Charleston on Thursday, he scored 15 points, handed out four assists and finished 6-of-8 from the free-throw line as the Bulldogs earned their historic first victory over the Cougars, 62-57.
Kelly then evened his clutch performance against College of Charleston with another strong outing at The Citadel on Saturday. In Samford's thrilling 69-65 road victory, Kelly tallied 15 points, a team-high seven assists, five rebounds and two steals, while playing 39 of the 40 minutes of the game.
Since playing at home against Sam Houston State on Dec. 15, Kelly is shooting a sizzling 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from 3-point range. Overall, the Bulldogs' sharpshooter is shooting a SoCon-best 46.4 percent from beyond the arc.
The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Thursday at 7 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs begin a critical two-game North Division homestand against the Western Carolina Catamounts to be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
