Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to The Citadel in Southern Conference action Friday night at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, Samford drops to 10-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Southern Conference action. The Citadel improves to 4-8-2 overall and 2-5 in SoCon play.
The Citadel struck first with a goal by Nicole Levermann in the seventh minute of the contest. Samford came back to tie the score late in the first half when
Taylor Borman netted a goal in the 31
st minute of the match, knotting the score at 1-1. The teams headed to halftime in a 1-1 tie.
Early in the second half, The Citadel took the lead again. Levermann scored her second goal of the contest, this one in the 50
th minute to give the visiting Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Samford, however, tied the score just 40 seconds later when
Amanda Abbott scored a goal off an assist by Borman to make the score 2-2.
The game-winning goal was scored by The Citadel's Lea Raedle in the 58
th minute of the contest. Raedle's goal was assisted by Ana Mesa and gave The Citadel a 3-2 advantage. Samford had several shots at tying the match down the stretch, but the Bulldogs were unable to net another goal as they eventually fell, 3-2.
As a team, Samford out-shot The Citadel, 26-5. Samford had three corner kicks, to two by The Citadel. Naomi Carter, The Citadel's goalkeeper, had 12 saves on the night.
Samford will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 20, when the Bulldogs play host to Francis Marion. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start from the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
