ELON, N.C. – The Samford University women's tennis team's 2013 season came to an end Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament as the eighth-seeded Bulldogs dropped a 4-0 decision to the top-seeded College of Charleston Cougars at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
With the loss,
Samford (9-15) dropped to 0-2 against the Cougars this year. The Bulldogs were also defeated by
College of Charleston (18-8) in the regular-season contest held April 6 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., 7-0.
The Cougars claimed all four points in singles play Friday, which took place first due to the chance of inclement weather.
Katherin Schofield gave the Cougars its first point of the match with a win over Samford's
AnnMarie Lyon, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6. College of Charleston's Kelly Kambourelis then defeated
Stephanie N'tcha, 6-4, 6-2, in the second spot moments before Brooke McAmis put the Cougars up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over
Jessica Northcutt at No. 3.
The match was clinched for College of Charleston at the No. 1 position as Christin Newman posted a 6-1, 6-4 win against
Kristin Lewis.
With their victory, the top-seeded Cougars moved on to the tournament semifinals and will play No. 4-seed UNCG on Saturday at 9 a.m. (CDT) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Despite Friday's loss, the future is extremely bright for the Samford women's tennis team. The Bulldogs' 2013 roster is devoid of any seniors and will return all six starters next season. Samford's lineup is chalk full of talented players and the 2014 Bulldogs will possess enough experience to make serious waves in the SoCon Championship race.
