#11 Louisville Sweeps DH From Samford Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Samford baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at 11th-ranked Louisville Saturday afternoon at Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals won the games by scores of 18-2 and 4-2.
 
With the losses, Samford falls to 11-8 on the season. Louisville improves to 15-4 with the wins, as the Cardinals sweep the three-game series from Samford.
 
"This was a disappointing weekend," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "It's one thing to lose three games, but it's another thing to lose three games and not play your best baseball. While that third game was at least competitive, it still by no stretch was our best baseball."
 
For Samford in game one, Tyler Filliben hit a solo home run in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate. Alex Milazzo (2-1) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up seven runs, six earned, on six hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
 
Louisville was led at the plate by Zach Lucas, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sutton Whiting also had three hits for the Cardinals. Jared Ruxer (4-1) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits to earn the win on the mound.
 
In game one, Louisville jumped on top early with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Samford got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning when Filliben hit a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 7-1.
 
Louisville answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 9-1. The Cardinals added a run in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh to push their lead to 12-1 after seven innings.
 
The Cardinals plated their final six runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the score 18-1. Louisville had five hits and sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth inning. Samford added one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 18-2.
 
In game two, Filliben drove in a run, going 1-for-5 at the plate. Jordan Wren also drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Jared Brasher (0-1) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three runs, just one earned, on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
 
For Louisville in game two, Grant Kay and Collin Lyman each had two hits and an RBI. Kyle McGrath (1-1) pitched 2.2 innings in relief without allowing a hit to earn the win for the Cardinals. Nick Burdi tossed the final inning to pick up his second save of the season.
 
Samford jumped on top first in game two, plating one run in the top of the second inning. Drew McWhorter singled to lead off the inning, and then moved to third base on a double by Patrick McGavin. With one out, McWhorter scored on a ground out by Wren for a 1-0 Samford lead.
 
Louisville tied the score with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Chittenden doubled with one out. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kay to make the score 1-1.
 
The Cardinals took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lyman tripled to drive in Lucas for the first run of the inning. Lyman later scored when Kyle Gibson reached base on a Samford error to give Louisville a 3-1 lead.
 
Samford cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Caleb Bryson singled to lead off the inning and then moved to second base on a wild pitch. He then scored on a single by Filliben to close to within one run.
 
The Cardinals added one final run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 4-2. Kay singled to lead off the inning and then stole second base. He then scored on a single by Jeff Gardner for the game's final run.
 
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, March 18, when the Bulldogs play host to Alabama State. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
