Samford StatsCHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Samford University men's tennis team's 2014 campaign came to an end Thursday at the Champions Club as the Bulldogs were defeated by the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
With the loss, Samford completed its injury-riddled 2014 season with an 8-10 overall record, as well as a 5-3 mark in SoCon play. The Bulldogs also moved to 0-2 in matches against
Appalachian State (10-12). On Friday, the Mountaineers will continue their SoCon Tournament run against the top-seeded Elon Phoenix.
In Thursday's hard-fought contest, Samford won the doubles point and took an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs' No. 1 doubles combination of
Elliot Barnwell and
Trey Carter cruised to an 8-3 victory over Appalachian State's duo comprised of Zach Bost and Sebastien King to start the competition, while
Austin Akers and
Fares Kilani secured Samford's initial point with an 8-5 triumph against the Mountaineers' Ollie Casey and Daniel Hoang on court No. 2.
Akers and Kilani finished their 2014 season with a 10-6 doubles record. Additionally, the Bulldogs' tandem of Barnwell and Carter completed the year with a 7-8 mark in doubles play.
In Thursday's singles competition, Samford received a straight-set victory on court No. 4 from Carter, 7-6 (5), 6-1, but Appalachian State also carded wins on courts No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6, to secure the 4-2 team triumph.
With the Mountaineers leading the match, 3-2, Appalachian State's King clinched the win with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 decision against Samford's Barnwell.
Barnwell, the Bulldogs' lone senior on the team this season, concluded his final campaign with a 12-6 singles record. Carter closed out his stellar sophomore campaign with a seven-match winning streak, as well as a 10-8 overall record.
Next season, Samford will be without the talented exploits of Barnwell, but all six remaining players on the roster will return for the 2015 campaign.
