Volleyball Returns Home To Face UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Samford University volleyball team returns home to the Pete Hanna Center for the first time in a month to take on cross-town rival UAB on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs (6-7) are coming off its first Southern Conference match of the season where they took a 3-1 victory over the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga last Friday at Maclellan Gym. The win was head coach Derek Schroeder's 75th SoCon win and 140th career-win of his coaching career.

Junior Emily Meitz had a career night in the effort as she tallied a career-high of 14 kills and tied her career-high of six total blocks. Redshirt freshman T.J. Russell also turned in a solid offensive outing for Samford as she tallied 10 kills on 20 attempts (.400) and sophomore setter recorded a double-double of 40 assists and 11 blocks.

Samford trails UAB (4-12) by a large margin in the all-time series standings as the Blazers hold a commanding 21-2 record over the Bulldogs.  The last time SU took a match from UAB was back on Sept. 4, 2001 inside Seibert Hall when the Bulldogs captured a 3-0 upset victory over a 6-2 Blazer squad.

Samford will remain at home for its next series of SoCon matches as they play host to Western Carolina University on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. for its annual Dig Orange match to raise awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Caroline Neisler. SU will also play again on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. against The Citadel.
