BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two Samford University cross-country runners will conclude their 2016 campaigns on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.
Arsène Guillorel will represent the Bulldog men, and
Karisa Nelson will represent the Bulldog women.
This is the first time in program history that Samford has qualified a male and female athlete for the national meet in the same season.
Guillorel, a junior from Pontchateau, France, punched his ticket to Terre Haute thanks to his fourth-place finish at the NCAA South Regional on Nov. 12. He clocked a 10K personal-best 30 minutes, 24.6 seconds to secure one of the four individual qualifying spots.
Like Guillorel, Nelson sealed her trip to nationals with a fourth-place finish at the regional meet. The junior from Brewton, Alabama, recorded a 41-second 6K personal-best 20:14.5.
Both Guillorel and Nelson will enter the national meet with prior championship experience under their belts. Guillorel advanced to the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships, where he placed 164th. He also qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he posted a 12th-place finish in the 5K. Guillorel's school-record time 13:53.85 earned him Second Team All-America honors.
Nelson also competed at June's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She placed 21st in the 1,500 meters and was named All-America Honorable Mention.
Guillorel and Nelson will enter Saturday's races propelled by waves of momentum that have built steadily throughout the season. Guillorel has set personal records in three of the four races he's competed in this fall, while Nelson has lowered her personal record in all four races.
On Oct. 29, she became the first Samford woman to win the Southern Conference meet since former standout Lauren D'Alessio triumphed in 2012. Named SoCon Women's Runner of the Year, Nelson is also the first Samford woman since D'Alessio to qualify for the national meet.
This Saturday, she and Guillorel will look to cap their strong seasons with one last pair of punctuating performances.
The women's 6K race at LaVern Gibson Championships Cross Country Course will begin at 10 a.m. (CT). The men's 10K race will follow at 11 a.m. (CT).
