BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Samford University basketball team will continue play in its four-game, season-opening road swing Monday at 6 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs square off against the Campbell Camels in a key early-season, non-conference matchup to be held at CU's Gore Arena/Pope Convocation Center (3,095).
Â
Samford (1-1) heads into the contest with hopes of bouncing back from a road loss at New Mexico State on Wednesday. Against the Aggies, the Bulldogs only shot 33 percent from the field and 21 percent from 3-point range.
Â
New Mexico State's Pan Am Center has proven to be an extremely difficult place to play. The Aggies boast a remarkable 75-9 record at home in the last five seasons.
Â
Samford's leading scorer at New Mexico State was true freshman
Triston Chambers. The Bulldogs' 6-foot-2 sharpshooter from Cold Springs, Alabama, scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and drained a trio of 3-point baskets. Chambers also pulled down three rebounds and handed out a pair of assists.
Â
Sophomore center
Wyatt Walker registered his second straight double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. In two games this season, Samford's relentless 6-foot-9 native of Jacksonville, Florida, is averaging 13.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per outing.
Â
The Bulldogs'
Demetrius Denzel-Dyson,
Justin Hopkins and
Terry Brutus all finished with seven points apiece.
Â
Campbell (1-2) also enters Monday's contest looking to rebound from a loss. On Saturday, the Camels suffered an 82-66 setback at Morgan State. Chris Clemons scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half, while Shane Whitfield added a career-high 17 points plus seven rebounds.
Â
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Kevin McGeehan, Campbell is 5-1 against Southern Conference members with victories last season over VMI and The Citadel. The Camels are 3-0 at home versus the SoCon in McGeehan's tenure
Â
Monday's game marks the first of three SoCon opponents the Camels will face in the 2016-17 season. Campbell travels Saturday to VMI and to The Citadel (Dec. 4).
Â
In the last meeting between the schools, Samford defeated Campbell, 65-56, on Dec. 28, 2014, in Birmingham. Dr. Brad Creed, who was named Campbell University's fifth president on July 1, 2015, spent 12 years as Samford's provost, executive vice president and professor of religion
Campbell.
Â
The Camels' Director of Athletics Bob Roller is now in his sixth year at the school. He spent more than 11 years as A.D. at Samford, where he oversaw the construction of the 5000-seat Pete Hanna Center
Â
Samford went 4-3 against the Camels at 947-seat Carter Gym from 1995-2003. On Monday, the Bulldogs will play at 3095-seat Gore Arena for the first time.
Â
Following Monday's game at Campbell, the Samford University basketball team will remain on the road and travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a high-profile matchup against the Cincinnati Bearkats to be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CST) at Fifth Third Arena. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
