Basketball Eager To Host Alabama A&M In 2017-18 Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University basketball team will compete in its first regular-season home game of the 2017-18 season Monday as the Bulldogs welcome the Alabama A&M Bulldogs to the Pete Hanna Center for an in-state matchup to be held at 7 p.m. (CT).
 
The game will be broadcast live on the Southern Conference Digital Network with Blake Gardner and Grant Gardner calling the action.

SAMFORD
1). The Bulldogs (0-1) return to action Monday with aspirations of bouncing back from a difficult 95-56 road loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday.
 
2). Against Arkansas, Samford only shot 32.8 percent from the field, 27.6 percent from 3-point range and 53.3 percent from the free throw line.
 
3). Samford's Kevion Nolan, Justin Coleman and Stefan Lakic all earned the first official game action of their Bulldog careers Friday. Coleman finished with six points and three assists, while Nolan tallied three points and a rebound. Lakic chipped in with two points and a board against the Razorbacks.
 
4). Samford returns 12 of 13 players from last year, including 97-percent of its scoring production.
 
5). Samford owns a 2-0 record in its all-time series against Alabama A&M. Monday marks the first meeting between the teams since Dec. 2, 1990, when Samford earned an 86-81 victory in Seibert Hall.
 
ALABAMA A&M
1). The Bulldogs (0-1) opened their 2017-18 season Saturday at Ohio and dropped a 61-53 decision to the Bobcats.
 
2). Junior Mohamed Sherif paced the Alabama A&M with 14 points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes of action, while newcomer Arthur Johnson chipped in 12 points including a pair of 3-pointers. Alabama A&M had 24 turnovers in the game that resulted in 14 Ohio points.
 
3). The Bulldogs will hit the court Monday under the direction of first-year Head Coach Donnie Marsh and assistant coaches Dylan Howard and Tyler Marsh. The squad features six returning letterman, including De' Ederick Petty who led the 2016-17 team with a 27.9 3-point field goal percentage. He was also second with 13.3 points per game for Alabama A&M.
 
4). Marsh was named head coach at Alabama A&M on April 12, after having served as the associate head coach at Texas Southern for the last two seasons, and in all, has been an assistant coach for the last 13 years with stops at Indiana, UAB, USF and Texas Southern.
 
5). Alabama A&M finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 2-27 overall record, as well as a 2-16 record in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
 
INSIDE STUFF
Over the summer, Samford's Josh Sharkey spent time working out with his cousin, 14-year NBA veteran and collegiate standout at St. Joe's, Jameer Nelson.

NEXT
Samford will next be in action Thursday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs return to the road to face the LSU Tigers in another tough non-conference matchup. The game will be held at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
