TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Samford University baseball team received a combined 5-of-7 performance at the plate from senior T.J. Dixon and junior Kevin Williams, Jr., on Friday, but the remainder of the Bulldogs' squad finished 1-for-23 with 12 strikeouts in a 16-3 series-opening road loss against the No. 5-ranked Florida State Seminoles in a nonconference game held at Dick Howser Stadium.

Samford (2-2) lost its second game in a row Friday and will continue its current four-game road swing Saturday at noon (CT) against Florida State (3-2).

The Bulldogs' Williams powered a pair of home runs in the contest and upped his Southern Conference-leading total to four this season. Samford's junior transfer from Miami-Dade College finished 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in all three of the team's runs. Williams connected on a two-run bomb in the second inning before hitting a solo shot in the seventh.

Williams currently leads the Bulldogs with a .500 batting average (6-of-12) this season.

T.J. Dixon, Samford's senior centerfielder from Mobile, Alabama, is batting .375 on the year and his 3-for-4 performance at the plate Friday proved to bolster his average. True freshman Branden Fryman tallied the Bulldogs' sixth hit of the game.

Florida State, the No. 5-ranked team in the nation, jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, a 9-2 advantage in the second frame before building a 15-2 tally in the bottom of the fifth.

The Seminoles, behind a trio of home runs and 15 base hits, eventually registered the 16-3 win.

Cole Sands (2-0) earned the win for Florida State with six strikeouts in five innings pitched. Samford's starting pitcher Jesse McCord (0-1) was issued the loss.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Saturday at noon (CT) as the Bulldogs continue play in their three-game road series against the fifth-ranked Florida State Seminoles to be held at Dick Howser Stadium.
