TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- With the score of Saturday's contest deadlocked at 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, No. 5-ranked Florida State exploded for five runs on two hits, including a grand slam from Quincy Nieporte, to pull away from the Samford University baseball team en route to an 8-0 victory in the second game of this weekend's three-game set.

After opening the season with a 2-0 record, Samford (2-3) has suffered three straight defeats. The Bulldogs topped UNC Asheville in their first two games of the season before dropping the series finale and the first two matchups on the road at Florida State (4-2).

Samford's Mikhail Cazenave (1-1) started Saturday's game and extended his scoreless inning streak on the season to 10 prior to running into trouble in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs' senior right-hander struck out three Seminole hitters in 4.1 innings pitched.

Florida State's Tyler Holton (2-0) looked strong in an 11-strikeout, seven-inning performance on the hill. He only allowed two hits and three walks in the contest.

Samford's offensive attack was paced by Kevin Williams, Jr., with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. The Bulldogs' junior leftfielder is currently leading the team with a .500 batting average (8-for-16) and four home runs this season.

Senior centerfielder T.J. Dixon also earned a hit Saturday, while third baseman Taylor Garris finished 1-for-2 at the dish and junior infielder Greg Mula tallied a pinch hit in the top of the ninth inning.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Sunday at noon (CT) as the Bulldogs conclude play in their three-game road series against the fifth-ranked Florida State Seminoles being held at Dick Howser Stadium.
