BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team was defeated in a pair of Southern Conference home games Saturday as the red-hot Furman Paladins extended their winning streak in conference play to 11-straight outings with victories of 3-2 and 4-1 in a doubleheader held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Â
With Saturday's losses,
Samford (26-21, 7-10 SoCon) moved to 16-9 in home games this season. The Bulldogs will face
Furman (25-21, 12-8 SoCon) in this weekend's finale at 1 p.m. (CT) on Sunday.
Â
The Paladins used a pair of complete-game pitching performances to take the doubleheader. Sophomore left-hander
Grant Schuermann (5-4) tallied the win in game one, while junior All-SoCon standout
Will Gaddis (6-3) proved to be even more dominant in the nightcap.
Â
Schuermann only allowed two runs on six hits in the opener. He added four strikeouts in the contest and didn't walk a single Bulldog. In the second game, Gaddis struck out six, while only allowing a single run on four base hits.
Â
GAME ONE - - FURMAN def. SAMFORD, 3-2
The Paladins' senior catcher Cameron Whitehead drove in all three of Furman's runs in Saturday's first game as he belted a pair of home runs that proved to be the difference in the matchup. In the top of the fifth inning, Whitehead hit a two-run homer to left field, while he added a solo shot, also to left field, in the seventh.
Â
Samford scored runs in the bottom of the fifth and the seventh, but couldn't sustain a rally against Schuermann to overtake the Paladins.
Â
The Bulldogs' starting pitcher
Cody Shelton (4-2) turned in a solid outing. Samford's sophomore right-hander only allowed three runs on five hits, but ended up being saddled with the loss. Senior reliever
Jared Brasher entered the game in the top of the eighth inning and retired all six batters he faced.
Â
Offensively, Samford's
Austin Edens and
Anthony Mulrine both tallied RBI in the contest. Edens blasted his eighth home run of the season to deep left-center field in the seventh inning, while Mulrine singled home
Taylor Garris in the fifth.
Â
The Bulldogs'
Branden Fryman,
Kevin Williams, Jr.,
Troy Dixon and Garris also registered hits in the opening game.
Â
GAME TWO - - FURMAN def. SAMFORD, 4-1
The Paladins rode the talented right arm of Gaddis to victory as he hurled a complete game in the win. Furman garnered two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure a 4-1 advantage. The Paladins never trailed in either end of the doubleheader and limited Samford to four hits in the nightcap.
Â
The Bulldogs' lone run occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning as sophomore second baseman
Troy Dixon powered an opposite-field home run well over the wall in left-center field. The home run proved to be his fourth of the season.
Â
Samford shortstop Fryman made a number of outstanding plays in the field Saturday and also finished 2-for-4 at the dish. Williams, Jr., registered the Bulldogs' fourth base hit of the game.
Â
Furman's scoring was powered by Carter Grote's 3-for-5 performance. He notched his seventh homer of the season and drove in a pair of runs. Centerfielder Sky Overton also drove in a run in game two, while going 2-for-5 at the plate.
Â
Samford's starting pitcher
Mikhail Cazenave (3-7) only allowed a pair of runs against Furman, but tallied the loss. Senior reliever
Tanner Cunningham came in late to pitch the final 2.2 innings of the game and only allowed a single hit, while striking out two Paladins.
Â
Samford and Furman will square off in the final game of this weekend's SoCon series Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) right here at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
