DAVIS, Calif. -- The Samford University soccer team will be competing in the state of California for the first time in school history Friday as the Bulldogs square off against the UC Davis Aggies at 6 p.m. (CT) in a pivotal cross-regional showdown to be held at the Aggie Soccer Field.
Â
Samford (2-5-1) heads into this week's historic road trip riding the positive momentum of an undefeated weekend. On Friday, the Bulldogs battled their way to a key 1-1 home draw with Georgia before traveling to defeat Western Kentucky on Sunday, 1-0.
Â
Against the Hilltoppers, Samford received an early goal from senior forward
Jermaine Seoposenwe and used a brilliant defensive performance to record at 1-0 road victory.
Â
Seoposenwe's game-winning goal, the school-record 31
st of her career, occurred at exactly 5:59 into the match and was set up by
Kaitlyn Orman on a corner kick. Orman, Samford's talented redshirt junior, lofted a high, perfectly-placed ball into the box where Seoposenwe skied high to head into the back of the net.
Â
Orman's assist proved to be her first of the season, while Seoposenwe's goal was her team-leading fifth.
Â
The Bulldogs have faced an arduous schedule this year. Hands-down one of the toughest in the nation, Samford'S 2017 slate has already featured matches against Memphis, Alabama, No. 4 Florida State, Michigan State and Georgia.
Â
UC Davis (1-7-0) enters the weekend with aspirations of snapping a three-match losing streak. Since earning a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime triumph against San Francisco on Sept. 1, the Aggies have been defeated in consecutive matchups against UNLV, 2-1, Fresno State, 2-1, and Sacramento State, 1-0.
Â
Boasting a tough defense this season, UC Davis has only allowed opponents to score a total of 12 goals in eight matches. Six of the Aggies' seven setback this year have been by a one-goal differential, including a hard-fought 2-1 loss to the third-ranked and defending national champion USC on Aug. 18.
Â
UC Davis owns a 1-4 record when playing at home this season. Head Coach Twila Kaufman is in the midst of her fourth year at the helm of the Aggies' program and holds a 22-33-9 overall record.
Â
Senior midfielder Mandy McKeegan and freshman forward Mahlah Catline are tied for the Aggies' lead in goals scored this season with two apiece.
Â
Following Friday's key road test at UC Davis, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs continue their historic California road swing with a highly-anticipated matchup against the Saint Mary's (CA) Gaels. The matchup will be held at Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga, California, which is located just east of Oakland.
