JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Samford University soccer team will conclude play in its two-match Southern Conference-opening road trip Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs square off against the ETSU Buccaneers in a critical league contest to be held at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
Â
Samford (5-5-1, 1-0 SoCon) heads into the matchup riding the positive momentum of a five-game undefeated streak. Since Sept. 3, the Bulldogs have played to a 1-1 home draw with Georgia and then tallied identical 1-0 road victories against Western Kentucky, UC Davis, Saint Mary's (CA) and Western Carolina.
Â
On the road against Western Carolina on Friday, Samford's
Jermaine Seoposenwe fired home the game-winning goal exactly 51 seconds into the second overtime period to defeat the Catamounts, 1-0, in a hard-fought SoCon opener held at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
Â
Seoposenwe's golden goal was assisted by both
Abriella Argueta and goalkeeper
Anna Maddox, who helped set up the decisive tally in the 101
st minute of action. The score proved to be Seoposenwe's seventh of the season and the 12
th game-winner of her illustrious Bulldog career.
Â
Samford has tallied four straight shutout victories and hasn't allowed a goal in the last 470 minutes of action. The Bulldogs outshot Western Carolina, 26-3, on Friday, including a 15-2 tally in shots on goal.
Â
Samford's Maddox notched her fourth straight shutout Friday. The Bulldogs' reigning SoCon Player of the Week registered two key saves in the win over Western Carolina.
Â
ETSU (3-6-0, 1-0 SoCon) enters Sunday's matchup with a full head of steam after posting a pivotal 3-0 home victory over Chattanooga on Friday. With their win, the Buccaneers snapped a four-match losing streak, which featured recent setbacks to Radford, 4-1, Virginia Tech, 3-1, Eastern Kentucky, 3-1, and George Mason, 6-1.
Â
In Friday's home triumph against Chattanooga, ETSU got on the board first on a 10-yard strike from Maegan Sours less than three minutes into the game.
Â
That goal stood up until early in the second half when Raffaella Guiliano electrified the home crowd with an unlikely 30-yard laser beam into the upper-left corner, staking the Bucs to a 2-0 advantage with 54:07 left to play. It was the freshman's first career goal.
Â
ETSU put the match out of reach with less than 11 minutes remaining as Eleanora Goldoni found the back of the net with a 15-yarder, off a free kick from Emily McKerlie. It was Goldoni's seventh goal of the season and the 24th of her career, tying her with Simona Koren for sixth on the Bucs' all-time list.
Â
ETSU goalkeeper Lea Ann Cutshall, back between the pipes after a three-game absence, recorded a trio of saves as the Bucs posted their third shutout of the season.
Â
Last year, Samford earned a 2-0 record against the Buccaneers. The Bulldogs defeated ETSU, 3-0, in Birmingham, Alabama, during the regular season and then posted a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind triumph against the Bucs in the championship match of the 2016 SoCon Tournament.
Â
Following Sunday's key road test at ETSU, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin a three-match SoCon homestand against the Chattanooga Mocs to be held at home in the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
