BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— New Samford Head Men's Basketball Coach
Bucky McMillan announced the signing of A.J. Staton for his 2020 class Friday.
Staton is McMillan's second signee so far, joining Jaron Rillie, who's signing was announced Wednesday.
"We couldn't be more thrilled about A.J. joining our basketball program," McMillan said. "He is a good student who works extremely hard academically. A.J. possesses a lot of great attributes that will immediately translate to the college basketball game. A.J. is an elite competitor who can defend, rebound and score in a variety of ways. It's no surprise that A.J. was such a sought after recruit from schools at every level. His relentless work ethic and hard-nosed nature makes him the perfect fit for our style of play. We look forward to seeing A.J. flourish as a student-athlete at Samford and have an immediate impact on the Southern Conference.
Staton (6-5, 190, G, Charlotte, N.C./West Oaks Academy (Fla.)) was named first team All-SIAA at West Oaks Academy in Florida. He averaged 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals per game as a senior. His team was ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
Staton won a state championship as a junior Blanche Ely High School. He was named the MVP of the state tournament that season.
Staton was rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals. He chose Samford out of 10 offers.
