BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team opened the 2021 season with a 5-3 victory over the UT Martin Skyhawks Friday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Samford got all of the offense it needed with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
- Max Pinto drove in two runs for Samford in the second inning, while Brooks Carlson drove in one and Colton Ledbetter scored on a wild pitch.
- Samford added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Pinto drove in Blake Bortak with a sacrifice bunt, pushing Samford's lead to 5-0.
- UT Martin plated three runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 5-3.
ON THE MOUND
- Samuel Strickland (1-0) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on five hits, striking out six batters without allowing a walk to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- Carson Cupo pitched the final inning to pick up his first save of the season.
- Winston Cannon (0-1) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on four hits to take the loss for the Skyhawks.
NOTABLES
- Brooks Carlson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Ryan Crockett went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
- Max Pinto drove in three runs in a 1-for-3 performance.
- UT Martin was led by Sean Dixson and Will Smith, both going 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Christian Hall drove in UT Martin's lone run of the game.
