GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Samford baseball team dropped the series opener at No. 7 Florida, 8-4, Friday night at Florida Ballpark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Florida got the scoring started with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning, and then added another run in the third for a 3-0 lead.
- The Gators added three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth for an 8-0 advantage.
- Samford got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning when Tyler McManus hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 8-1.
- The Bulldogs added another run in the eighth inning when Blake Bortak scored on a wild pitch to make the score 8-2.
- Samford plated two more runs in the top of the ninth inning. Ayrton Schafer scored on an error to make the score 8-3. Carson Allison then scored when Bortak reached on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 8-4.
ON THE MOUND
- Samuel Strickland (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned, to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
- Tommy Mace (2-0) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing no runs on three hits to earn the win on the mound for the Gators.
NOTABLES
- Tyler McManus had a home run and one RBI in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
- Blake Bortak also drove in a run for Samford.
- For Florida, Jud Fabian went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.
- Sterlin Thompson went 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI.
