Baseball Completes Series Sweep With 8-3 Win At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford baseball team completed its series sweep of the UNCG Spartans with an 8-3 win Sunday afternoon from the UNCG Ballpark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford took the early lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Garrett Howe singled to drive in Will David for the game's first run. Brooks Carlson later singled up the middle to drive in Howe for a 2-0 Samford lead.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, Samford's Taylor Garris reached on an infield single to drive in Kaden Dreier to make the score 3-0.
  • UNCG's Hogan Windish hit a two-run home run to left field to cut the Samford lead to 3-2.
  • Samford broke the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Dreier drove in the first three runs with a double, and Garris and Ryan Crockett drove in a run each as Samford pushed its lead to 8-2.
  • Windish doubled to drive in another UNCG run to cut the lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Zach Hester (1-1) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Hamp Skinner and Chase Isbell covered the last 3.1 innings to secure the win for the Bulldogs.
  • Jared Mathewson (2-3) tossed 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits to take the loss for the Spartans.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Kaden Dreier went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Max Pinto went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Bulldogs.
  • Taylor Garris drove in two runs, while Brooks Carlson and Garrett Howe drove in one run each for Samford.
  • UNCG was led by Hogan Windish, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
 
NEXT UP 
  • Samford will play at cross-town rival UAB Tuesday, Mar. 23. The game is set for a 5:30 p.m. start from Regions Field.
