Late Rally Lifts Baseball Over Jacksonville State, 10-9

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford baseball team overcame an eight-run deficit to earn a 10-9 win over in-state rival Jacksonville State Wednesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jacksonville State scored four runs in the second inning, one run in the third, two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take a 9-1 lead over Samford.
  • Samford began its comeback with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sonny DiChiara scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler McManus. Ryan Crockett later singled to drive in Ayrton Schafer to cut the lead to 9-3.
  • The Bulldogs then plated seven runs in the seventh inning to take the 10-9 lead.
  • Towns King scored Samford's first seventh-inning run on a wild pitch. Schafer then singled up the middle to drive in Brooks Carlson to make the score 9-5.
  • Crockett then walked with the bases loaded to drive in DiChiara, and Taylor Garris walked with the bases loaded to bring home Schafer to cut the lead to 9-7.
  • McManus then scored on an error. Towns king then reached on an infield single to drive in Crockett to knot the score at 9-9.
  • The game-winning run scored when Garris scored when DiChiara reached on an error for a 10-9 Samford lead.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Samford used eight different pitchers in the game, and Carson Cupo (1-0) pitched 1.0 inning of hitless relief to earn the win on the mound.
  • Chase Isbell tossed the final 2.0 hitless innings to pick up his second save of the season.
  • Corley Woods (0-1) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs, one earned, on one hit to take the loss for the Gamecocks.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Towns King went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Ayrton Schafer went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Ryan Crockett drove in two runs in a 1-for-2 performance.
  • Cole Frederick led JSU at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBI.
 
UP NEXT 
  • Samford will host Toledo in a three-game weekend series. The teams are set to play Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
