Baseball Earns Road Win At Jacksonville State, 5-4

JACKSONVILLE, Ala.
 – The Samford baseball team plated two runs in the eighth inning to earn a 5-4, come-from-behind win at in-state rival Jacksonville State Tuesday night at Rudy Abbott Field and Jim Case Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jacksonville State jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Samford took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Garrett Howe, Sonny DiChiara and Brooks Carlson each walked with the bases loaded to give Samford a 3-2 lead.
  • Jacksonville State came back to take a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • Samford answered with two runs in the top of the eighth inning to retake the lead at 5-4. Ryan Crockett singled to center field to drive in Tyler McManus and Carson Eddy to give Samford the lead.
  • Jacksonville State had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but a Samford double play ended the threat and sealed the 5-4 victory.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Carson Hobbs (1-0) pitched 1.0 inning in relief, allowing just one hit to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Carson Cupo picked up his second save of the season, tossing the final inning without allowing a hit.
  • Trey Fortner (1-2) gave up two runs on two hits to take the loss for the Gamecocks.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Max Pinto and Towns King had two hits each for Samford.
  • Ryan Crockett drove in two runs for the Bulldogs.
  • Jaylyn Williams led Jacksonville State, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.
 
NEXT UP 
  • Samford will host VMI in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m., and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
