Late Runs Lift Baseball To 6-5 Win At Troy

TROY, Ala. – The Samford baseball team plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a two-run lead and then held off a Troy rally in the bottom of the inning to earn a 6-5 win over the Trojans Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford took an early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. Kaden Dreier scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Ayrton Schafer. Ryan Crockett then hit a solo home run to right-center field for a 2-0 Samford lead.
  • Troy tied the game on a two-run home run by Logan Cerny in the bottom of the second inning, and then the Trojans plated two more runs in the third inning to give Troy a 4-2 lead.
  • Samford knotted the score at 4-4 when Garrett Howe tripled to drive in Taylor Garris and Will David in the top of the fifth inning.
  • The Bulldogs took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Will David scored the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Howe. Taylor Garris then scored on a wild pitch for a 6-4 Samford lead.
  • Troy added one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Samford held on for the 6-5 win.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Carson Cupo (3-0) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up just one hit to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Chase Isbell pitched the final inning to pick up his third save of the season.
  • For Troy, Mason Kenney (0-1) tossed 1.0 inning, giving up two runs on one hit to take the loss for the Trojans.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Garrett Howe drove in three runs with a triple in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate.
  • Ryan Crockett hit a solo home run, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Will David went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs.
  • For Troy, Logan Cerny went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
