Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Samford baseball team split its Southern Conference doubleheader at Western Carolina Friday at Hennon Stadium. Samford won the first game, 8-5, before falling in game two by a score of 7-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Western Carolina took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Samford knotted the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning when Sonny DiChiara singled to right-center field to drive in Will David.
  • The Catamounts plated two runs in the seventh inning to retake the lead at 3-1.
  • The Bulldogs took the lead for good with five runs in the top of the eighth inning. David singled to drive in Blake Bortak, and Colton Ledbetter scored on an error to tie the score. Taylor Garris then singled to drive in David to give Samford the lead. DiChiara then doubled to drive in Garrett Howe and Garris for a 6-3 Samford advantage.
  • In the top of the ninth inning, David singled to drive in Bortak for a 7-3 Samford lead. Max Pinto then singled to drive in David to make the score 8-3.
  • Western Carolina added two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the final score 8-5.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Carson Cupo (5-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  •  Zach Franklin (4-3) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing seven runs, just four earned to take the loss for the Catamounts.
 
NOTABLES 
  • DiChiara went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • David went 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Pinto was 3-for-6 with an RBI for Samford.
  • Western Carolina was led by Seth Graves, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford jumped on top first when Tyler McManus singled to drive in Howe in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 Samford lead.
  • The Bulldogs added another run in the second inning when Howe singled to drive in Garris to make the score 2-0.
  • Western Carolina came back with six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-2 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Catamounts added a run to push their lead to 7-2.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Jesse McCord (3-4) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up six runs, just four earned, on nine hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
  • Ryan Mitschele (3-2) tossed the complete 9.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits to earn the win for the Catamounts.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Howe and McManus drove in a run each to lead Samford in the second game.
  • For Western Carolina, Luke Robinson and Justice Bigbie had two hits each, including a double and one RBI apiece.
