Baseball Completes Series Sweep Of VMI With 7-6 Win Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford baseball team completed a three-game sweep of its series with VMI with a 7-6 win Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After VMI took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning, Samford plated four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Sonny DiChiara hit a three-run home run, and Tyler McManus had an RBI single to give the Bulldogs the lead.
  • VMI tied the score with two runs in the top of the second inning at 4-4.
  • Samford took the lead for good at 7-4 with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. McManus hit a three-run home run to center field for a three-run Samford lead.
  • VMI plated a run in the fourth inning and another in the seventh inning to make the final score 7-6.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Hamp Skinner (2-0) earned the win on the mound for Samford, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
  • Chase Isbell picked up his fifth save of the season, tossing the final hitless inning.
  • For VMI, Ben Capehart (0-2) took the loss, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits.
 
NOTABLES 
  • McManus went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Max Pinto, Garrett Howe and Colton Ledbetter had two hits each for Samford.
  • DiChiara also homered for the Bulldogs, driving in three runs in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate.
  • Will Knight went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI to lead VMI at the plate.
 
NEXT UP 
Samford will host in-state rival Troy Tuesday, April 6. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
