Men’s Hoops To Host Mercer Wednesday Evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 - The Samford men's basketball team (11-8, 1-6 SoCon) will return home to host the Mercer Bears (12-8, 5-2 SoCon) Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Curt Bloom (PBP), Murry Bartow (Color) and Blake Gardner (sideline) calling the action. Live stats will also be available at www.SamfordSports.com.    
 
  • Samford and Mercer are meeting for the 121st time, with the Bears owning a 74-46 lead in the series. The teams met earlier this season in Macon, Ga. Mercer earned an 83-80 win in that earlier contest. Mercer has won the last 17 meetings in the series. 
  • The Bulldogs are coming into the game off a 61-58 loss at UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon. Samford was led in the loss by Ques Glover and Logan Dye with 14 points each. Jaron Rillie added 10 points for the Bulldogs. Wesley Cardet pulled down 11 rebounds for Samford.
  • Samford has been led in scoring so far this season by sophomore guard Ques Glover, who ranks fourth in the Southern Conference with an average of 17.9 points per game. Glover leads the SoCon in free throw percentage (.890) and ranks second in assists (4.3 apg.).  Jermaine Marshall ranks second in the SoCon in rebounding, grabbing 8.6 boards per contest.
  • Mercer has a record of 12-8 overall and 5-2 in Southern Conference play. The Bears are coming off a 72-64 win over Western Carolina Saturday evening. For Mercer in the win, Jalen Johnson had 18 points and six rebounds. Jordan Jones tallied 16 points, followed by Felipe Haase with 13 points and six rebounds.  
  • Mercer has been led in scoring so far this season by Felipe Haase, averaging 15.5 points per game. Jalen Johnson is scoring 14.7 points per game, followed by Neftali Alvarez at 13.9 and James Glisson III with an average of 11.6 points per contest.
  • Mercer is averaging 72.2 points per game so far this season, while allowing 70.4 points per contest. 
  • Samford is averaging 74.8 points per game while also giving up 74.9 entering Wednesday night's home game against Mercer.
  • Samford has a record of 6-2 so far this season in the friendly confines of the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs have earned home wins against Merryville College, Spring Hill, Mississippi College, Alabama A&M, Kennesaw State and Western Carolina. Samford has fallen at home to Belmont and ETSU. 
  • Samford is No. 1 in the SoCon in turnovers forced per game (14.6) and No. 2 in steals per game (7.8). The Bulldogs forced a season-high 33 turnovers versus Spring Hill.
  • Samford has made a habit of winning close games, posting a record of 5-3 in games decided by three points or less.
  • The Bulldogs are 10-1 when leading at halftime this season and 7-3 on the year when controlling the opening tipoff.
  • Samford's bench has outscored the opposition's reserves 11 times this season, leading to an 8-3 mark in those contests.
  • SoCon teams combined to win six games against Power 5 conference (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, Pac-12) teams during the non-conference portion of the 2021-22 season. The six wins is the most the league has accumulated against those conferences since also winning six games in the 2012-13 season.
  • Mr. Double-Double Jermaine Marshall (6-6, 225, So.) recorded his seventh double-double this season with 14 points and 11 boards in Samford's 85-60 win over Western Carolina. The Akron transfer has been a force on the wing for the Bulldogs, averaging 11.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
  • Ques Glover (6-0, 180, So.) has made a remarkable impact on the Bulldogs so far this year, ranking No. 4 the SoCon in scoring at 17.9 points per game while ranking second in the SoCon in assists at 4.3 per game. The Knoxville, Tenn., native, scored 16 points and dished out five assists in Samford's win over Western Carolina.
  • Jaden Campbell (6-5, 195, Soph.) has been a major spark for the Bulldogs, averaging 10.6 points per game, ranking 24th in the Southern Conference. The Brampton, Ontario native led the team with 16 points last Wednesday, and he tied for the team lead with 20 points later that same week against ETSU.
  • Wesley Cardet, Jr. (6-6, 205, Fr.), one of the nation's most sought after recruits, continues to develop as the season progresses. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native is averaging 8.5 points, and 4.9 rebounds per game. He had 15 points and nine rebounds against ETSU. Cardet was the No. 60 ranked player in the nation and No. 13 at his position by Rivals at West Oaks.
  • Jacob Tryon (6-11, 220, Sr.) has continued to be a presence down low for Samford this season. Tryon currently ranks fifth in the Southern Conference in blocked shots per game, averaging 1.1 per contest.
  • In the last meeting between Samford and Mercer, played on Jan 5, the Bears earned an 83-80 win in Hawkins Arena in Macon, Ga. Jermaine Marshall led Samford with a career-high 24 points. Marshall also grabbed nine rebounds in the contest. Logan Dye added 20 points in 30 minutes of action. Ques Glover had a strong second half, finishing with 23 points with 18 of them coming in the last 20 minutes.

  • After Wednesday night's home game against Mercer, Samford will play at Western Carolina on Saturday, with the game scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Cullowhee, N.C. Samford's next home game is set for Wednesday, Feb. 2, when the Bulldogs host Chattanooga at 7 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
