ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Ques Glover,
Bubba Parham,
Jermaine Marshall, and
Logan Dye were named Preseason All-SoCon while the Samford Men's Basketball team was picked to finish second in the Preseason Coaches Poll and third in the Preseason Media Poll announced on Wednesday at the 2022 Southern Conference Basketball Media Day presented by Ingles.
Glover (Knoxville, Tenn.) comes into the season fresh off a 2021-22 campaign that saw him earn All-SoCon First Team honors, in addition to being named a finalist for the prestigious Lou Henson Award that honors the top mid-major player in NCAA Division I college basketball. The junior guard ranked third in scoring in the SoCon last season at 19.2 points per game and second in assists per contest with 4.4
Parham (Snellvile, Ga.) was a top transfer target for the Bulldogs this offseason after spending his previous three seasons at Georgia Tech, where he played in 58 games from 2019-22. Before joining the Yellow Jackets, Parham played a pair of seasons at VMI, where he totaled 1,125 points. Parham led the SoCon in scoring average in 2018-19 at 21.4 points per game while being named to the All-SoCon second team. He additionally earned SoCon Freshman of the Year honors in 2017-18.
Marshall (Hueytown, Ala.) led the Bulldogs and ranked third in the conference in 2021-22 in rebounding average at 8.2 boards per game. The junior forward additionally ranked second on the team and 19th in the league with a 13-points-per-game scoring average. Marshall led the league with 13 10-rebound games last season while also logging 11 double-doubles.
Dye (Haleyville, Ala.) ranked third on the team in scoring last season at 12.7 points per game and second in rebounding at 5.3 boards per contest. The senior forward posted 15 or more points in eight games in 2021-22 while also compiling a pair of double-doubles. Dye led the Bulldogs in field goal percentage, averaging 54 percent from the floor.
Furman (78) edged out the Bulldogs (74) by just four points for the top spot in the coaches' poll and received four out of 10 first-place votes. Samford received five first-place votes in the media poll.
"I like our team a lot and I think we're going to have a very successful season," Head Coach
Bucky McMillan said. "We have a lot of great pieces and they're working hard. It's the best I've felt about a Samford basketball team since I've been here. I know when a team has the it factor and I feel this team has that to them. Rankings at this time of the year are irrelevant though. Last year, we were picked towards the very bottom of the league and we were fighting at the very top for a championship when it was all said and done. We've got to focus on the things that matter, which is how we can reach our potential. That will be determined by how hard we work every day to get there, and if we do that I think we'll have a very successful season."
