BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team will play its first Southern Conference road contest of the season on Saturday, Dec. 31 against The Citadel Bulldogs.
Tip-off from Charleston, S.C. is set for 12:00 p.m. (CST) with the game airing live on ESPN+.
Saturday's match-up is the 28th meeting between The Citadel and Samford, with Samford holding a 14-13 series advantage and having won four of the last five games.
Samford split its season series 1-1 with The Citadel in 2021-22, taking the most recent match-up 76-74 on Feb. 21, 2022, from the Pete Hanna Center. Logan Dye (17 Points, 11 Rebounds) and Jermaine Marshall (16 Points, 10 Rebounds) both logged a double-double in the win.
Samford is off to a 7-7 start through 14 games, including a mark of 6-2 at home. The Bulldogs are averaging 79 points, 38 rebounds, a 44 percent field-goal efficiency, and a +8.2 scoring margin.
The Bulldogs knocked off SoCon foe Mercer 78-69 in their conference opener on Wednesday, Dec. 28. Marshall (25) and Dye (23) combined for 48 points with Marshall grabbing a team-high seven rebounds in the win.
The Bulldogs shot 57 percent from three (13-23) in their win over the Bears, with Marshall knocking down five of seven, Nathan Johnson connecting on four of seven, and Dye converting three of four. Jaron Rillie facilitated an offense that shot 50 percent (26-52) on the night with a career-high 10 assists.
Marshall was the top scorer among SoCon players in their opening games with his 25-point effort against Mercer while Rillie compiled the most assists (10) and steals (4) in game one of league action.
Dye comes in leading the Bulldogs in both points per game (11.3) and rebounds per game (5) in road competitions this season. Bubba Parham is also averaging double digits in scoring (10.7 PPG) while leading Samford in road games with an average of 2.8 assists per contest.
The Citadel Bulldogs knocked off Chattanooga 76-68 at home in their SoCon opener on Thursday, Dec. 29. Austin Ash led the way on offense with 16 points while Stephen Clark notched 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Ash (16.2 PPG) and Clark (15.3 PPG) both are averaging in double digits for the Bulldogs in points per game, with Clark leading the squad in rebounds per contest at 6.5.
Ed Conroy is back at the helm of the men's basketball program at The Citadel, where he served as the head coach from 2006-10. Conroy most recently spent the 2021-22 season as the associate head coach at Vanderbilt. Before coaching on the Commodore's staff, he spent five seasons on staff at the University of Minnesota. He served as the team's associate head coach in his last season after serving as an assistant for the previous four seasons.
