King’s Homer Lifts Baseball To 6-5 Win At Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Samford junior second baseman Towns King hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Bulldog baseball team to a 6-5, come-from-behind win at Alabama State Tuesday evening at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

With the win, Samford remains undefeated on the season with a record of 4-0. Alabama State falls to 1-3 with the loss.

"This was an incredible job by our guys staying in there and battling tonight," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We have won a lot of games late here over the years, and two of our four have been in the final two innings so far. This team has a great make up."

Towns went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI on his game-winning blast. Garrett Howe went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Colton Ledbetter and Maurice Hampton Jr. had one hit each as well for the Bulldogs.

"Offensively, we hit several balls that would have been out of a lot of baseball fields," David said. "I loved the team's composure instead of frustration. Lots of great defense tonight, but (Stephen) Klein put on another show at first base with his range, and saved a double with a diving play in the ninth."

Timmy Watkins (1-0) pitched 1.0 inning of hitless relief to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Carson Hobbs pitched the final inning, allowing just one hit to pick up his second save of the season. Will Lynch and Brody Westbrooks also saw time on the mound for Samford.

"Will (Lynch) really settled in after a tough start and started the zero parade," David said. "Brody (Westbrooks) was masterful with four dominant innings to keep us there."

Alabama State was led at the plate by Trenton Jamison, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Corey King went 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBI for the Hornets. Payton Harris (0-1) took the loss for Alabama State, tossing 1.0 inning, allowing two runs on one hit.

Samford struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Kace Garner hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Will David to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.

Alabama State answered with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead. King drove in two runs, and Chris Lewis and Ian Matos drive in a run each in the inning. King later scored on a passed ball for the fifth run of the inning.

In the top of the third inning, Samford's Hampton singled down the right field line and later scored on an Alabama State error to cut the ASU lead to 5-2.

In the top of the eighth inning, Howe tripled to right field to drive in Stephen Klein to cut the ASU lead to 5-3. Later that inning, Howe scored from third base on a ground out by David to bring Samford to within one run at 5-4.

Garner walked to lead off the top of the ninth inning, and then Blake Bortak came in to pinch run for Garner. King then hit his home run to put the Bulldogs on top for good at 6-5.

Samford will play a three-game series at Florida State this weekend. The teams are set to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) in Tallahassee, Fla.
