BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford's
Kaden Dreier hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, his second of the game, to break a 5-5 tie and eventually give the Bulldogs a 6-5 win over Southeastern Louisiana in the second game of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The win, coupled with Friday night's victory, gives Samford the series win over the Lions. Samford improves to 9-7 with the win. Southeastern Louisiana falls to 8-11 with the loss.
"I love the fight," Samford head coach
Tony David said. "I say it every time, but I just love these guys and I love the fight that we had. We were cruising along, up 3-0 and they popped us and took the lead back, 4-3. We came right back, (Andrew) Bennett hit the ball out of the park and tied it back up for us. And then K.D. got a good one there for us, it was hard to tell what was going on with the wind today, so I didn't know that ball was going out. We really slaughtered the ball all day today."
Samford was led at the plate by Dreier, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI.
Stephen Klein went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
Andrew Bennett also homered in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
Blake Bortak (1-2) pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up no runs on two hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Michael Ross and
Alex Goff also pitched in the game for the Bulldogs.
For Southeastern Louisiana, Evan Keller went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Rhett Rosevear, Preston Faulkner and Shea Thomas had two hits each for the Lions. Andrew Landry (1-2) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits to take the loss on the mound for SLU.
Samford took an early 3-0 lead with one run in the first inning and two more in the second inning. In the first inning, Klein reached base on an infield single to drive in
Garrett Staton for the game's first run. In the second inning, Dreier led the inning off with a solo home run to left field to make the score 2-0. Later in the inning, Staton singled to left field to drive in
Joseph Salvo for a three-run Samford lead.
Southeastern Louisiana plated two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, however, Bennett hit a solo homer to left field to knot the score at 4-4.
Samford took the lead at 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Staton scored from third base when Klein hit into a double play. Southeastern Louisiana tied the score at 5-5 with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Samford, once again, answered in the bottom of the eighth inning when Dreier led the inning off with a home run to left field to give the Bulldogs the 6-5 win.
