GREENSBORO, N.C. – Samford outfielder
Maurice Hampton Jr. homered twice, but it was not enough as the Bulldog baseball team dropped a 10-5 decision in game two of a three-game series at UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
With the loss, Samford falls to 18-18 overall and 5-3 in Southern Conference play. UNC Greensboro improves to 16-23 overall and 1-7 in league action.
"We played well again today," Samford head coach
Tony David said. "The guys battled hard all the way to the last inning, loading the bases. Having 14 hits and a clean defensive game is going to win a lot of games in this league. In the end, we just didn't get the timely hits, particularly with two outs, and they did."
For Samford at the plate, Hampton went 4-for-5 with two home runs and two RBI.
Colton Ledbetter went 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run and one RBI.
Towns King went 3-for-5 for the Bulldogs in the loss.
Michael Ross (3-1) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits to take the loss for Samford.
Blake Bortak and
Jacob Newman also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.
"Mo (Hampton) has been working like crazy," David said. "We have felt all along once it clicked for him all those tools were going to be special to watch on the field."
UNCG was led by Kennedy Jones, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Zack Budzik went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Hogan Windish went 2-for-5 with a home run and one RBI. Austin Parsley (6-3) tossed 7.1 innings, allowing four runs on 12 hits to earn the win on the mound for the Spartans.
"I have never been around or seen such an accumulation of injuries of all kinds for one group," David said. "We are hoping for the best for Blake. We have a chance to win a series tomorrow."
