Big Inning Lifts ETSU To Game Three Win Over Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The ETSU baseball team plated seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to break open a close game on its way to a 12-8 win in the final game of a three-game Southern Conference series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
Samford earned wins in the first two games of the series to take the series win, two games to one. Samford falls to 22-23 overall and 9-6 in Southern Conference play, placing the Bulldogs in a tie for second place in the league standings with Mercer. ETSU improves to 26-17 overall and 8-7 in league play.
 
For Samford in the game, Colton Ledbetter went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Blake Bortak and Maurice Hampton Jr. had two hits and an RBI each. Alex Goff (4-2) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three runs, just two earned, on three hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
 
ETSU was led at the plate by Bryce Hodge, going 3-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Ryan McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI, while Ashton King drove in three runs, hitting a home run in a 1-for-6 performance at the plate. Nathaniel Tate (4-3) earned the win on the mound for the Bucs, tossing 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
 
ETSU plated two runs in the first inning and one in the fifth, while Samford scored one in the second inning as the Bucs grabbed a 3-1 lead. Samford came back to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Towns King, Ledbetter and Hampton drove in a run each as the Bulldogs secured a 4-3 lead.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, however, ETSU plated seven runs to take an 10-4 advantage. The Bucs made the score 11-4 with a run in the seventh inning. Samford answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 11-7. Ledbetter doubled to drive in two runs and later scored on an error as Samford closed to within four runs.
 
In the ninth inning, each team plated a run to make the final score 12-8.
 
Samford will next take on defending national champion Mississippi State in a game played at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium Tuesday evening. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
