GAME NOTES--SAMFORD AT UAB (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team is set to play at cross-town rival UAB Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at PNC Field, and to host 14
th-ranked Auburn Sunday at 5 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field.
Samford and UAB will be meeting for the 10th time, with Samford holding a 4-3-2 series lead. The teams last met on Aug. 26, 2021, with Samford earning a 2-1 win at Shauna Yelton Field. The last time the two teams played at UAB was in 2018, a 2-0 Blazer win.
Samford and Auburn are meeting for the 18
th time, with Auburn owning a 12-3-2 record in the series. The teams last met in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, with Samford earning its first-ever outright NCAA Tournament win, defeating the Tigers by a score of 2-0.
The Bulldogs enter Thursday night's contest with a record of 3-1-2. Samford played Army to a 1-1 tie last Thursday. The Bulldogs then took on 21st-ranked West Virginia in a game played at Auburn Sunday afternoon, with the Bulldogs falling on a late goal, 1-0.
In the Army game,
Ella Simpson scored a goal in the 85th minute to knot the score at 1-1, leading to the tie. In the loss to West Virginia, the Mountaineers scored in the 89th minute for the game's lone goal. For the season, Samford has been led by
Whitaker Buchanan and
Kylie Gazza with two goals each.
Nikki Bario leads the team in assists with three so far this season.
As a team, through the first six matches of the season, Samford has surrendered just three goals to its opponents. The Bulldogs have netted eight goals as a team so far this season.
The UAB Blazers have a record of 2-2-2 overall so far this season. The Blazers have earned wins over Chattanooga (1-0) and Kennesaw State (7-2), ties with Georgia Southern (1-1) and Arizona (2-2) and losses to Memphis (2-1) and Arizona State (6-2). So far this season, UAB has been led by Stella Lawson with six goals.
Auburn enters the week with a mark of 3-0-3. Last week, the Tigers tied West Virginia (0-0) and defeated Army (1-0). Auburn has been led so far this season by Anna Haddock with two goals and three assists for a total of seven points.
