KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – The Samford women's team finished second and the men came in fifth at the 2023 Southern Conference Cross-Country Championship, held Friday morning at the Ivey M. Redmond Sports Complex.
"I'm very proud of our women's team for coming home with a trophy for the fifth consecutive year," Samford head coach
Chad Balyo said. "Our conference is heavily focused on cross-country/distance running, so to be able to maintain that streak is something we take great pride in as a well-rounded and balanced track and field/cross-country program. I look forward to shifting our focus to the NCAA South Regional Championship in Gainesville in two weeks as we try to improve on our NCAA Regional Ranking."
The women's team scored 71 points, behind only Furman with 20 points.
Adeline Haisch, who was named the league's Freshman of the Year and was named both second team All-SoCon and All-Freshman, led the Samford women's team individually, placing 12
th with a time of 17:40.3 on the 5K course.
Harper McGowan finished 15
th, running the course in 17:54.8, while
Sinkenesh Parker finished in a time of 17:57.2 to come in 16
th.
Edie Smith placed 18
th at 18:01.1, while
Gabbie Hoots ran the course in 18:05.9 to place 19
th.
Katie Keller placed 23
rd with a time of 18:13.1, while
Macie Pfeuffer finished 25
th at 18:21.6.
Isabella Edwards had a time of 18:59.7 to place 36
th, while
Anna Adams finished 40
th with a time of 19:05.9. Edwards and Adams both joined Haisch on the league's All-Freshman squad.
On the men's side, Samford scored 145 points to place fifth. Furman won the men's race as well with 22 points.
Andrew McGinnis led Samford, placing 15
th with a time of 25:29.1 on the 8K race.
Caleb Scheffler came in 28
th at 26:14.5, while
William Jordan, an All-Freshman team member, placed 31
st at 26:18.7.
Brooks Floyd finished 34
th with a time of 26:24.3, while
David Brown placed 42
nd at 26:47.3.
Cole Arrington placed 54
th with a time of 27:26.6, while
William Murray came in 61
st at 27:46.9. Harrison Seigel placed 63
rd with a time of 27:53.8, while
Grayton Murray came in 75
th at 28:33.9.
The Samford cross-country teams will next compete at the NCAA South Regional in Gainesville, Fla., on Nov. 10.
