Baseball Drops Midweek Contest at Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Samford Baseball Team took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning against Mississippi State on Tuesday evening, but ultimately fell 9-4 to the Bulldogs.

With the loss, Samford drops to 13-12 overall while Mississippi State improves to 15-11.

Stephen Klein knocked a pair of hits for the Bulldogs while freshman Aaron Walton knocked a two-run home run in the top of the second. Walton also scored a run while John Anderson recorded both a run and a hit in the contest.

On the mound, Heath Clevenger (0-1) took the loss and was one of nine Bulldog pitchers to toe the rubber on the evening. Jake Holifield tossed a game-high two innings of scoreless relief while Alex Gaeto struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh.

"Despite a disappointing loss, we had several positives tonight," Head Coach Tony David said. "We have to continue to work to find options on the mound for all the frontline guys that are out. Sanders and Gaeto bounced back with really good outings, along with Holifield."

Samford struck first in the contest when Walton belted an 0-0 offering with one out over the right-center field wall to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. The blast marked Walton's first collegiate home run and was set up by a hit batsman by Bennett one batter prior.

Mississippi State answered in the bottom of the second by executing a double steal of second and home, followed by an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game.

Samford regained the lead in the top of the fifth when a two-out throwing error brought in Lucas Steele. An ensuing rundown on an extension of the play between first and second base also allowed Anderson to advance home, giving the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.

Mississippi State responded in its next at-bat by plating three runs on three hits. Following an RBI walk from Conno Hujsak, Dakota Jordan brought in a pair with an RBI double down the left-field line that put them up 5-4.

From there, Mississippi State added another run in the sixth on a ColtonzLedbetter RBI single and got three more in the eighth to go up 9-4. A passed ball and RBI singles from Luke Hancock and Hunter Hines accounted for the damage done in the inning.

"Walton had the big swing early," David said. "He's another young guy in there for us making the most of his opportunity. In the end, we had it in front of us with a chance to win it and let it get away in the middle. Our focus is already completely on The Citadel and another big conference weekend coming up."

The Bulldogs will look to rebound on Friday, March 30 when they host the Citadel for game one of a three-game SoCon weekend series. First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 6:00 p.m. (CST).
