Six Strong from Cravey, Timely Hitting Lead Baseball to Game-One Win over The Citadel

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team used a six-inning, 10-strikeout effort from Jacob Cravey and knocked six two-out RBI to grab a 6-3 win against The Citadel in game one of their three-game Southern Conference series on Friday evening.

With the win, Samford improves to 14-12 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Citadel drops to 14-11 overall and 1-3 in SoCon action.

Garrett Staton came up with the big hit for Samford with a two-out grand slam in the fourth inning that gave the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead. The sophomore infielder also scored a run and extended his current hitting streak to 11 games and his on-base streak to 14 contests.

John Anderson, Jayden Davis, and Kaden Dreier all knocked a pair of hits and drove in a run. Anderson and Drier both slugged an RBI double, while Davis also collected a two-bagger and upped his current hitting streak to 11 games.

Cravey (4-2) conceded just two runs on six hits en route to his fourth win of the season. Turner Thompson struck out three over two innings of one-run relief while Ben Petschke (5) slammed the door shut in the ninth to grab his fifth save of the season.

Cravey began his night by striking out the first five batters that he faced. He kept The Citadel quiet on the base paths until the bottom of the fourth inning when a pair of infield hits helped load up the bases before a single to center by Travis Elliott gave the Citadel an early 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs answered in their next at-bat by hanging five runs on four hits, with Staton's grand slam accounting for the big blow in the frame. Drier got the scoring going with a two-out double to right center that plated Anderson, followed by a walk from Aaron Walton and a single to left by Andrew Bennett that brought Staton to the plate. The grand slam marked Staton's second of the season and team-high seventh home run in 2023.

Samford added another run in the bottom of the seventh in the form of a two-out RBI double from Anderson to left. Davis led off the inning with a double to right field before being brought home by Anderson.

The Citadel took advantage of a two-out single by Noah Mitchell to trim its deficit to three runs before giving way to the 6-3 final score.

Samford batted .417 (5-12) with two outs, in addition to posting a .429 (3-7) average with runners in scoring position. The Bulldog pitching staff stranded seven baserunners and induced eight ground outs, in addition to four fly-ball outs.

Game two between Samford and The Citadel will be played on Saturday, April 1. First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 2:00 p.m. (CST).
