Baseball Sweeps Series Against The Citadel With 8-2 Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team picked up a series sweep over Southern Conference foe The Citadel with an 8-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The win improves the Bulldogs' record to 16-12 overall and 5-1 in SoCon play. The Citadel falls to 14-13 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Stephen Klein knocked a team-high two hits with two runs scored on the day while Andrew Bennett and Garrett Howe each drove in a pair of runs.

Aaron Walton and Lucas Steele each slugged an RBI double while John Anderson clubbed a go-ahead RBI triple in the sixth. Jayden Davis added a run and a hit to improve his current hitting streak to 13 games,

Will Lynch (2-2) gave up just two runs over six innings while striking out three on the way to his second win of the season. Ben Petschke (6) grabbed his SoCon-leading sixth save of the season by tossing the final 2.1 innings and giving up just one hit.

The Citadel struck first in the contest when a two-out single through the left side by Anthony Badala gave the visiting Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage in the second inning.

Samford evened the contest at one in the bottom of the fifth when Walton knocked a two-out double to right center that brought in Bennett, who was hit by pitch one batter before to set up Walton.

The sixth inning saw both teams tally runs, with The Citadel regaining the lead on a Noah Mitchell single that put them up 2-1. The home Bulldogs broke through in the bottom half of the inning by notching three runs on three hits, beginning with a one-out double by Steele that brought home Klein. Anderson followed Steele's two-bagger with an RBI triple and was brought home by Howe on a sacrifice fly to give Samford a 4-2 advantage.

A pair of leadoff walks from The Citadel in the seventh inning made things uneasy, but Trey Sanders was able to retire the next two batters via pop-up upon entering from the bullpen. After a two-out walk loaded the bases for the visiting Bulldogs, new reliever Petschke halted The Citadel's rally by retiring the next batter on one pitch to escape the inning unscathed.

The home Bulldogs put the game out of reach by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth. A Howe bases-loaded walk, followed by a wild pitch and a two-RBI single from Bennett accounted for the damage done in the frame.

Samford once again thrived in big situations today, batting .417 (5-12) with runners in scoring position and logging four two-out RBI. The home Bulldogs finished the series with a total of 13 runs driven in with two away.

The pitching staff for Samford made pitches when it mattered, holding The Citadel to a .125 (2-16) average with runners on and a clip of .222 (2-9) with runners in scoring position.

The Bulldogs will take to the road for their next contest on Tuesday, April 4 against North Alabama. First pitch from Florence, Ala. Is slated for 5:00 p.m. (CST).
