Longball Lifts Bulldogs Past UNCG, 9-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball team slugged nine home runs and got 6.2 strong innings of work from starting pitcher Jacob Cravey to knock off UNCG 9-2 on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 17-13 overall and 6-1 in Southern Conference play while the Spartans fall to 15-15 overall and 3-4 in conference action.

John Anderson, Jayden Davis, Stephen Klein, Lucas Steele, and Aaron Walton all went yard in the contest, with Davis knocking a team-high three hits on the day to improve his current hitting streak to 14 games.

Walton drove in a game-high three runs on a pair of hits while Klein and Davis each added a pair of RBI. Garrett Howe, Walton, and Anderson all turned in a tw0-hit performance.

Cravey (5-2) struck out seven batters over 6.2 innings while conceding two runs on seven hits. Turner Thompson (1) worked the final 2.1 innings to pick up his first save as a Bulldog.

UNCG cracked the scoreboard first in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI groundout from Rowan Watt. Daniel Cerda led off the inning with a triple down the right-field line before crossing home.

Samford tied the contest in the bottom of the second on Steele's sixth home run of the season and went on to take a 5-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run homer by Walton, his third of 2023. An RBI single by Davis, followed by a two-run shot by Klein, accounted for the remainder of the damage done in the inning.

Following a towering solo blast by Davis to left field in the sixth, UNCG tallied its second run of the game on an RBI walk in the seventh to make it a 7-2 game. The Bulldogs responded in the bottom half of the inning on Anderson's team-leading ninth home run of the season and an RBI single from Walton to go up 9-2.

Thursday's offensive outpouring marked the second time this season that the Bulldogs launched five home runs in a game. Samford was once again exceptional in big moments, batting .533 (8-15) with two away and logging seven two-out RBI.

The Bulldogs and Spartans will play game two of their weekend series on Friday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
