Baseball Topped by Kansas

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball team fell 12-4 to of the University Kansas on Friday afternoon in game two of its series with the Jayhawks.
 
With the loss, Samford drops to 28-22 overall while Kansas improves to 23-27.
 
Lucas Steele led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits, two runs scored, and a run driven in. The freshman utility man slugged his 12th home run of the season in the setback.
 
Josh Rodriguez also knocked a pair of hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Garrett Staton added a hit and a run for the Bulldogs.
 
Jayden Davis knocked a base hit in his first at-bat in inning number one to extend his program-record hitting streak to 33 games.
 
Brody Westbrooks (3-3) took the loss. The junior righthander gave up six runs over four innings while striking out one and walking none.
 
Trey Sanders struck out three batters over three innings of relief while Heath Clevenger tossed 1.1 scoreless innings. 
 
Kansas kick-started the scoring action with a two-run homer by Janson Reeder in the first inning, but the Bulldogs responded by plating a pair in the bottom half. Anderson grounded into a 6-3 double play to bring in the first run while a solo shot by Steele tied the game at two.
 
The Jayhawks added four more runs in the top of the second, with solo shots by Collier Cranford and Kodey Shojinga and a two-run blast by Chase Jans accounting for the damage done. 
 
Rodriguez cut the Bulldogs' deficit in half with a two-run bomb, his seventh homer of the season, in the bottom of the fourth. The Jayhawks promptly responded by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, courtesy of RBI singles from Jake English and Cranford.
 
Kansas added four runs on five hits in the top of the eighth, with two-run home runs by Michael Brooks and Cole Elvis providing for the scoring action.
 
The Bulldogs and Jayhawks will play the third and final game of their series on Saturday, May 12 at noon (CST) from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
